Hangover symptoms can vary from person to person, and occasion to occasion, and they usually occur several hours after drinking.

What Causes A Hangover?

Dehydration

Ethanol alcohol is a diuretic, which is a drug that increases urination and flushes fluids from the body. When drinking alcohol you want to make sure you have water as well to avoid the affects of dehydration helps cause hangovers.

Acetaldehyde

Ethanol is converted to acetaldehyde by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. Acetaldehyde helps to form pyruvate, which impairs the ability of the liver to supply glucose to tissues, especially the brain. Because glucose is the primary energy source of the brain, this lack of glucose contributes to hangover symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, mood disturbances, and decreased attention and concentration.

Congeners

Congeners are toxic substances created during the alcohol fermentation process. When you consume alcohol, toxins are dispersed through your system as your liver breaks down the alcohol.  Different alcoholic beverages have different levels of congeners.  Depending on the level of congeners in the alcohol can determine how sick it can make you.  The amount of congeners is determined by the fermentation and distillation processes.  Lower levels of congeners will lower potential affects of a hangover.  More expensive alcohol usually contains fewer congeners because it goes through a precise distillation process that filters out a higher percentage of the congeners. Darker colored drinks,  like whiskey, brandy and red wine have more congeners than lighter drinks like vodka, gin and white wine.
